In the mid-1990s, a question began circulating among architects and designers that felt, at the time, more philosophical than practical: what happens to the design process when the space you are working in is no longer physical?
Virtual Reality was emerging as a design tool โ not yet mature, not yet commercially viable, but conceptually significant.
It proposed something that the profession had not fully confronted: that the environment in which decisions are made shapes the quality of those decisions. Change the environment, and you change what is possible to think.
That question has returned โ at institutional scale โ in the form of artificial intelligence.
